ICYMI: 4 updates from Celina City Council’s June meeting

At a recent Celina City Council meeting, city officials took action on a Chevrolet dealership and median landscaping standards.

Officials also discussed upcoming projects, including an expansion of Celina’s downtown square and a potential reorganization of the fire department’s staffing model.

Here’s what to know about council’s June 9 meeting.

1. Celina council approves 25-acre Chevrolet dealership near DNT

Council approved a request to amend a 2017 planned development to allow a Mac Haik Chevrolet car dealership on 25 acres near future Dallas North Tollway.

A representative from Chevrolet said the Celina location will be one of Chevrolet’s flagship dealerships and serve as a model for other locations in the future.

2. Celina council considers reconfiguring Ohio Drive for “enhanced square” downtown

Celina officials are moving forward with a plan to transform downtown Celina, starting with the creation of an “enhanced square,” Assistant City Manager Kimberly Brawner said.

The project will turn the block bounded by Pecan Street, Colorado Street, Walnut Street and Ohio Drive into a community-focused space bisected by a pedestrian walkway, according to Brawner’s presentation.

3. Celina council prohibits turf in future medians

Council has changed the city’s design guidelines to eliminate turf in future medians.

The new standards are expected to reduce the amount of water needed to maintain medians by roughly 60%, according to a presentation by city staff.

The new median design guidelines are part of a broader push to conserve water by updating city ordinances.

4. Celina Fire Department plans to hire 9 additional firefighters

The Celina Fire Department plans to add an additional firefighter to all of its fire engine crews by hiring nine additional firefighters in fiscal year 2026-27, Fire Chief Shawn White told council.

Moving from three-person crews to four-person crews will help “save lives and property” by aligning the department with firefighting best practices, White said.
