Plano crews treating roads as winter weather hits

Crews with the Plano Public Works Department began spreading sand on city roads on the morning of Feb. 23 to help with drivability due to freezing temperatures and rain. City officials said elevated surfaces in the city had begun accumulating ice by 9 a.m. Feb. 23.

A winter weather advisory is in effect across the Dallas-Fort Worth area through 6 p.m. Feb. 24, according to the National Weather Service. The warning states the weather will include a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet with possible ice accumulation from one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch.

Crews with the Plano Parks and Recreation Department were also out early Feb. 23 treating city facility walkways and entrances, according to city staff.

As of 9 a.m., Plano planned to complete its scheduled solid waste pickup for Feb. 23.

City staff said there had already been reports of trees and tree limbs falling on the morning of Feb. 23, much like crews dealt with during the winter storm earlier this month.

Plano residents who have trees down are asked to call the public works main line at 972-769-4140.

National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Bishop said Feb. 22 that the cold front was expected to be somewhat similar to the one from earlier this month but a bit drier and not quite as cold. He said the weather service is expecting the freezing rain and sleet across the DFW area to last until temperatures begin to rise throughout the day Feb. 25.

“[The roads] may not be quite ready for driving Friday morning,” Bishop said. “It should melt and dry by Friday afternoon.”
