Collin County warming stations ready to accept guests amid winter weather advisory

Warming stations will be open March 11 in both Plano and McKinney amid a winter weather advisory for Collin County issued by the National Weather Service.

A weather advisory is in effect from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on March 11 in parts of North and Central Texas, according to the Dallas-Fort Worth National Weather Service website.

Due to a blast of Arctic air, temperatures are expected to dip to 30 degrees, and North Texans can expect a wintry mix of rain, sleet and snow that is predicted to freeze the night of March 11.

A collaborative effort among The Salvation Army, the Collin County Homeless Coalition, North Texas cities and area churches, the warming stations provide short-term emergency shelter for those experiencing homelessness during inclement weather. Individuals who seek shelter at a station are provided with a safe place to sleep, a meal, a hot shower and clothing items from the organization's coat closet.

According to officials from The Salvation Army of North Texas, a warming station will open at 6:30 p.m. March 11 for overnight guests at the Plano Salvation Army building at 3528 E. 14th St. Dallas Area Rapid Transit buses will provide pickups from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Parker Road Station and Harrington Library. Doors close at the warming station at 10 p.m., officials said.

Another station will open at 6 p.m. on March 11 for overnight guests at the McKinney Salvation Army building at 600 Wilson Creek Parkway. Rides will be provided from Hall Library from 7-8 p.m. Doors will also close at that warming station by 10 p.m., company officials said.
