Children’s Medical Center Plano opened a new corridor that offers a variety of amenities April 28.
Two-minue impact
The new Public Amenities Corridor is on the first floor of the center and connects the Andrea-Mennen Family Foundation Atrium to The Bright Family Emergency Department. It now has the following areas:
- Karahan Family Resource Library
- Abbott Chapel
- Grab-and-Go cafe
The
library is significantly larger than the previous space in the atrium with varied seating for different age groups, Cate Mclaughlin, a media relations marketing and communications manager for the center, said. Books range from young adult novels to brochures and pamphlets with consumer health information.
Abbott Chapel was relocated from the Garden Level to the new corridor to be more visible and accessible for patients, families and team members, Mclaughlin said. The chapel is an interfaith, non-denominational space where patients and loved ones can share prayers.
The coffee shop and cafe offers a smoothie bar, specialty coffee, flatbreads and hot grill options. Mclaughlin said the cafe also has 24/7 machines with housemade meals and snacks.
The background
The Plano location for Children’s Medical Center has been expanding since January 2020. Its new patient tower opened in 2024.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area has expanded by 130,000 children in the last decade, according to the center website. Its North Texas pediatric population, currently at 2.4 million, is expected to double by 2050.
