Hutto City Council approves Residence Inn Hotel development

The Hutto City Council approved a planned unit development for a Residence Inn Hotel at a meeting June 4.

The Hutto Planning and Zoning Commission considered a request May 5 to establish the Hutto Residential/Residence Inn PUD on a 2.9-acre tract at 328 Ed Schmidt Blvd., seeking a height increase to 55 feet, reduced parking at 0.9 spaces per guest room, and allowance for a blank north facade.

Corina Zepeda sworn in as Hutto’s newest council member

Corina Zepeda was sworn in as the Hutto City Council Place 4 member at a May 21 meeting.

Out of 1,001 ballots cast in the May 2 election, Zepeda received 54.8% of the votes, while Brandon DeLeon received 45.1%. She is replacing Peter Gordon, who was term-limited after serving three terms as allowed by the city charter.

Zepeda has served and rooted her family in Hutto since 2015, and has a career in workforce development and higher education.

Hutto moves forward with new fire station, separate fire department efforts

Hutto City Council recently directed the Hutto Economic Development Corp. to move forward with a new fire station near the Hutto Megasite.

The new station aims to enhance fire protection in one of Hutto’s fastest-growing areas.

Mayor Mike Snyder cited the city’s rapid growth for the decision to move forward with establishing its own fire department. He said that as cities expand, it is common for local governments to take over fire services from ESDs, which were originally intended for rural areas.

Under the approved plan, the HEDC will help fund the project, Snyder said.
