Ground spraying for mosquitoes planned in Hutto

The city of Hutto will be spraying for mosquitos Aug. 2 and 3 in response to a sample that tested positive for West Nile virus.

The truck-mounted ground control product will dispense after 9 p.m. both days.

What happened

A sample from a mosquito trap at Hutto Lake Park tested positive for West Nile virus, according to a city press release July 26. Hutto’s emergency management department coordinated with the Williamson County and Cities Health District to spray the affected area as soon as possible.

What residents should know

The mosquito spray poses no significant health risk to people or pets, according to the city, but residents may want to stay inside during the treatment on both evenings.

The city recommends that residents help combat the mosquito problem by draining standing water and treating water with larvicides, which can kill eggs and larvae before they mature. Wearing long sleeve and using insect repellent when outside can prevent transmission of viruses from mosquitoes.
