Pflugerville ISD families are one step closer to knowing the district's new elementary attendance zones, a change necessitated by the closure of four elementary campuses at the end of the school year.
The district's Rezoning Task Force voted to recommend Map 10 to the board of trustees during its Oct. 20 meeting.
How we got here
The PfISD board unanimously voted to close Dessau, Parmer Lane, Pflugerville and Windermere elementary schools at the end of the 2026-27 school year as part of ongoing district optimization efforts.
The district launched a Rezoning Task Force composed of parents, community members and staff at the beginning of the semester. The task force is charged with finding campuses for students impacted by the closures while balancing enrollment across other campuses.
At the Sept. 22 task force meeting, Map 5 and Map 9 received the most task force votes. A public hearing, community meetings held at each of the closing campuses and a ThoughtExchange survey—which garnered more than 250 responses—were then launched to gather community feedback on the draft maps.
What changed?
Rachel Naugle, PfISD's director of school improvement and the rezoning task force facilitator, said some of the community concerns and priorities that Maps 5 and 9 raised included:
Keeping neighborhoods and groups of students together
Attending nearby schools with safe walking routes and reasonable bus rides
Avoiding overcrowding at receiving campuses
Having clarity about where dual-language programs will be offered, the rules for students who want to stay at their current school, and how changes will impact middle and high school feeder patterns
The new Map 10 recommendation implements a few changes.
Caldwell Elementary will remain a dual-language campus, while Wieland Elementary will open a Spanish dual-language program.
This map also proposes "legacy rules," which would allow students enrolled through the end of the 2026-27 school year to continue attending their current school until they age out in fifth grade.

Additionally, Naugle said the task force will not rezone schools east of the SH 130. Instead, a new committee will convene in January to take up rezoning this area, along with middle and high school boundaries.
"That process is not ending, it's just going to be done outside of the work of this committee," Naugle said. "The work of our committee is staying laser-focused on the boundaries of the four closing schools."
Looking ahead
The board of trustees is slated to have a first reading on the Map 10 recommendation at its Nov. 2 board workshop meeting. The board's next regular meeting will be held Nov. 19.
Naugle said the goal is to finalize the zones before winter break so families have time to plan for the next school year.
