Hutto ISD selects name for 2nd high school; mascot to remain hippo

A committee of Hutto ISD students and community members presented the name for the district's second high school in May.

In a May 14 board of trustees workshop, committee members presented the name selected from suggestions provided by the community in April: Creekside High School.

The district previously stated that the mascot for the new school will remain the hippo.

The details

The name is a nod to the city's history, student presenters said. According to the city of Hutto, one of the more popular legends explaining the city's affinity for hippos starts with a circus train that stopped in the area and an escaped hippo that found its way to Cottonwood Creek.

With several creeks running through the school district's bounds—Brushy Creek, Cottonwood Creek and South Fork Mustang Creek—students said the name also honors the natural landscape and agricultural history of the area.

How we got here

In May 2023, voters approved spending $522 million to expand and improve district facilities as HISD is growing. The bond included three propositions.

Proposition A—the largest of the three at $471.5 million—funds several major campus projects, including construction of two new elementary schools and expansion of the Ninth Grade Center into a full high school.

At $10.5 million, Proposition B provides funding for new instructional technology devices, such as classroom computers and audio-video equipment.

Proposition C provides $40 million for the renovation of the administrative building at 200 College St. into a districtwide academic center with space for several alternative education programs.

What's next?

Construction on Creekside High School is expected to wrap up next summer, in time for the school's planned opening for the 2027-28 school year.
