McHard Road construction to begin in 2020: Two Pearland road updates to know

As the year wraps up, Pearland is making strides on its road projects, including the McHard Road extension and Mykawa Road improvements. Here is the latest on both projects.

McHard Road extension

The timeline to bid for McHard Road has been pushed back by about two months. The city had to buy out 77 properties to extend the road and was originally scheduled to finish buyouts in May. The city is waiting on a permit from the Corps of Engineers and the EPA that must be issued before the project breaks ground in 2020. The permit is required because the project is receiving federal funds and will be on land not previously dedicated to public right-of-way. The new road will consist of a four-lane, concrete curb and gutter, divided roadway with raised medians and underground drainage. Construction is anticipated to cost of $33.63 million. The project is funded by the city of Pearland and Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Transportation Improvement Program.

Mykawa Road improvements

The design phase of the Mykawa Road improvements is approaching the 30% mark. The project will convert the two-lane road to a four-lane road; create a 10-foot-wide, shared-use path on the west side and a 6-foot-wide path on the east side; and make improvements to drainage, including installations of storm sewers and detention ponds. The city is in the process of reviewing right-of-way and how to minimize effects on local property owners. The project is set to go to bid in August 2021 with construction ending in 2023. The project is expected to cost $40 million. The funding source is yet to be announced.
