Kansas-based discount footwear retailer Payless ShoeSource Inc. announced it would immediately close 400 underperforming stores nationwide and in Puerto Rico after seeking bankruptcy protection under a Chapter 11 petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of Missouri. The chain operates 4,400 stores across 30 countries. Friendswood saw the closure of Payless at 500 Baybrook Mall, Friendswood, in January. No other stores have reportedly closed in Pearland or Friendswood as of print. www.payless.com
