Friendswood ISD discusses coronavirus preparation at March meeting

The Friendswood ISD board of trustees received an update during its meeting on March 2 regarding preparations being made by the district in the event of a coronavirus outbreak in the area. There are no confirmed cases at Friendswood ISD.

“It’s nowhere near a panic situation but we have to be aware and educate about what’s going on and what we’re doing as a district,” said Erich Kreiter, executive director of operations for FISD.

Kreiter said the district has sent communication to staff, faculty and parents about the symptoms of coronavirus and preventive measures, such as being diligent with hand washing and not touching the eyes, nose or mouth.

The cleaning methods and schedule have been modified while each campus is meticulously disinfected, Kreiter said.

“I have a weekly conference call with Texas Health and Human Services,” Kreiter said. “We will also be having a meeting with the school nurses to start developing protocol so we have a plan in place if a kid is sent home sick with flu-like symptoms.”

Kreiter said the district is monitoring the countries with travel restrictions so it can be aware if a student or family is planning travel to or from those countries.

“I know you know what’s going on but I want to give you insight as to what we’re doing,” Kreiter said. “The second I heard about it, I was already setting up meetings and making plans as how can we fight this as well as fight the flu itself.”
