Alvin ISD debuts schools in Shadow Creek Ranch, Pomona for upcoming 2017-18 school year

Alvin ISD opened the Shirley Dill Brothers and Pomona elementary schools to students for the 2017-18 school year on Aug. 17.

Brothers Elementary opened this year with around 650 students and Pomona Elementary opened with around 400 students. The schools will alleviate pressure from growing student enrollment.

“The past year, Duke, York, Wilder, Savannah Lakes, Mason and Marek elementary [schools] were all over permanent building capacity. The opening of Brothers and Pomona Elementary will alleviate the strain on those schools,” said Daniel Combs, assistant superintendent of professional learning and student and community engagement.

Both schools will accommodate up to 800 students each to allow for future enrollment growth, said Pat Miller, associate superintendent of student environment. Construction was funded through the 2015 bond.

Additionally, AISD is phasing in the opening of its JB Hensler Career and Technical Center in Manvel, which will be used by students across the district. Programs could be added at the CTE campus midway through the school year with a phased in rollout.

“The CTE [campus] will provide opportunities for teens and young adults to find their place in life and flourish,” Miller said.
