TxDOT to demolish I-35 ramp in North Austin early Saturday morning

In order to reconstruct a flyover connecting I-35 and US 183, state crews will demolish the existing ramp in North Austin early in the morning on May 8 and May 15.

The Texas Department of Transportation stated it will perform “controlled implosions” of the northbound I-35 to northbound US 183 flyover between 6-8 a.m. beginning this Saturday, May 8.

During that time, state crews will temporarily close both directions of mainlanes on I-35 and US 183, as well frontage roads at the I-35 and US 183 interchange, according to a May 7 TxDOT news release. The state agency said traffic will be stopped for 20 minutes at a time during the demolitions.

These implosions are part of a larger project to build four new or reconstructed flyovers connecting I-35 to US 183.

The northbound I-35 to northbound US 183 flyover is being reconstructed to reduce the incline. According to the state, the ramp was too steep and caused traffic—particularly large trucks—to slow down and delay traffic.

Reconstruction of this ramp will take approximately four months to complete, weather permitting.

Vehicles wanting to enter northbound US 183 from northbound I-35 will have to take a detour using the Rundberg Lane exit, or exit 241 on I-35. The detour will take drivers around the U-turn at the Rundberg and I-35 intersection. According to an April 22 TxDOT news release, that U-turn will be closed to local traffic in order to manage traffic flow.
