Crews finish safety improvements at North Lamar Boulevard and Morrow Street in North Austin

After starting construction earlier this year, Austin Transportation Department crews recently finished a collection of North Austin intersection improvements designed to make the area safer for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike.

In an Aug. 30 newsletter, the Austin Transportation Departmenr announced construction is complete on the improvements at the intersection of North Lamar Boulevard and Morrow Street. The intersection is located about half a mile south of the North Lamar Transit Center at Research Boulevard.

The intersection improvements, funded in part by the 2018 Mobility Bond, are designed to make travel safer for all modes of transportation.

Crews removed driveway entrances around the intersection in order to “reduce vehicle conflict” at certain spots, according to the Aug. 30 newsletter.

New ramps for bicycles were also added along Morrow to make it easier for cyclists to cross through the intersection.

Like other recent projects along the North Lamar corridor, the Austin Transportation Department added high visibility crosswalks and sidewalk improvements at the intersection in order to make travel safer for pedestrians. Further, city crews added a new Capital Metro bus stop on southbound North Lamar and relocated a bus stop on northbound North Lamar to make access to the transit stops easier for users.

According to the city of Austin’s Vision Zero map, there have been three crashes at the intersection of North Lamar and Morrow that resulted in four serious injuries and one death.
