Company launches shared electric mopeds in Austin

A shared electric vehicle company launched 1,000 mopeds in the city of Austin on Nov. 1.

Revel, a New York-based company, announced Austin as its third city Oct. 30.

“Austin is experiencing a period of incredible business and population growth and with that comes the need for new transportation options,” said Frank Reig, CEO and co-founder of Revel, in a news release. “We share the city’s commitment to innovation and rider safety and are excited to offer Austinites an easy, affordable and fun way to move throughout their city.”

To use the mopeds, riders must be 21 years old, have a valid driver's license and pass an initial safe-driving record background check, according to Revel.

The dockless mopeds are available to rent for $1 to unlock and then $0.25 per minute to ride and $0.10 a minute to pause a ride. Riders are restricted to ending their rides on the mopeds within the Central Austin area, but may ride them throughout the city using the pause feature, according to Revel.

Revel is also offering its Access program for riders who are eligible for federally administered assistance programs. These riders would qualify to receive a 40% discount on rides as well a a $25 credit, according to Revel.
