Renovation work continues on Hill Elementary School in Northwest Austin

As part of a modernization overhaul, renovation work on outdoor spaces at Hill Elementary School is ongoing into the fall semester.

However, Austin ISD officials said the renovation work does not interfere with student learning. The work, which includes renovations to playgrounds, landscaping work and a new basketball court, is expected to wrap by the end of October, according to a Sept. 13 newsletter from AISD.

Students returned to Hill Elementary in August after interior modernization improvements to the campus were completed.

As part of AISD’s 2017 bond program, Hill Elementary, located at 8601 Tallwood Drive, Austin, underwent more than $17 million in renovations to add multiple improvements and increase the school’s capacity.

According to an AISD fact sheet on the school, the modernization efforts increased Hill Elementary’s total capacity up to 870 students—a 26% increase from its previous capacity of 690 students.

The modernization improvements at the campus include new studios, playgrounds, the construction of outdoor learning areas and a new gymnasium, according to the district. A new parking lot and bus loop were further constructed over the past year.

AISD had to postpone the grand opening of the renovations due to increasing COVID-19 cases locally. The school district in its newsletter stated it intends to reschedule the grand opening when it is safe to gather in large numbers again.
