The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved adding the first phase of the UT Dell Medical Center to UT’s capital improvement program at an Aug. 12 meeting.
The CIP is the university’s approved list of major capital projects. Adding the project to the CIP allows the project to move forward with early design and development preparation work.
The background
The UT Dell Medical Center will be a 27-acre medical complex planned to be equipped with a hospital tower, outpatient facilities, an emergency department and 300-500 patient beds for specialized care, according to documents from the UT Board of Regents.
The medical complex is one piece of the recently announced 300-acre UT Dell Campus for Advanced Research off MoPac, and will be a collaboration with the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, per previous reporting from Community Impact.
As UT’s Dell Medical School continues to grow, the new facility could increase enrollment and allow for new residency programs and opportunities.
The details
Phase I of the project is expected to cost up to $1 billion and will be funded from the university’s revenue financing system bonds.
The RFS debt is expected to be repaid from clinical revenues at $56 million per year, according to documents from the UT Board of Regents.
The total cost of the project is expected to be $5 billion.
“This gives us the authority to begin spending so that we will be open on time and on budget with this project,” UT Austin President James Davis said.
What else
Phase I of the medical complex will consist of early packages and site preparation including site clearing, excavation, preparing subgrade structures and ordering long-lead construction materials and equipment.
Design development approval is also expected to occur this month.
“Today is a very big day,” Davis said. “[The medical complex] will establish the clinical foundation for a new academic health enterprise. It will advance research, education, health professionals and serve patients and serve Texas for generations to come.”
Next steps
Construction is expected to begin in the fall, with the complex completed in December 2030.
