Proposed Cameron/Dessau road safety project accepting comments

Plans are in development to increase traffic safety along Cameron and Dessau roads, including a new traffic signal, protected bike lanes, enhanced pedestrian crossings and more.

The details

Nearly 100 people are injured or killed annually on the corridor, according to the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department. According to ATPWD, from 2019-2023 on the section of Cameron Road and Dessau Road undergoing improvements, there were:

• 2,400 crashes
• 12 individuals killed
• 77 seriously injured
• 397 who suffered minor injuries

Though the road runs from North Austin to just south of Pflugerville, project improvements are focused on the road section between E. 51st Street and E. Parmer Lane. Per the project’s virtual open house, proposed improvements include:

• Adding or improving pedestrian crossings
• Adding protected bicycle facilities throughout the corridor
• Enhancing street lighting
• Increasing separation between vehicle traffic and sidewalks
• Relocation bus stops closer to safe crossings

The project will be funded through Austin’s 2022 Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant, alongside funds from the 2020 Mobility Bond, according to the project's website.

What else?

Residents can provide feedback on the proposed plans through Sept. 3. Staff will report on the feedback received and implement design changes prior to starting the project, which is expected to begin in late 2024 or early 2025.
