At Legends Coffee & Café, guests are in tune with the late ’60s and early ’70s classic rock scene. Since the shop opened March 1, coffee drinkers and cafe goers alike can experience the passion for music and coffee roasting that owners Steve and his wife, Mickie Blackmon, share. Steve and Mickie run Legends with their daughter Teahra Turner and Mickie’s sister, Elizabeth Duncan, who is overseeing the kitchen and crafted the menu, which is more extensive than most coffee shops. Food items include sandwiches, paninis, flatbreads, soups, salads and breakfast tacos. “I’ve been into coffee for 20 years,” Steve said. “I roasted my own coffee at home, for my friends and for me. I liked all the aspects of roasting coffee, so after retiring from the corporate world, I went off on my own to start this business.” Mickie was supportive of the idea and said she wanted to make it unique. Since she shared a love for rock music with her husband, they decided to make it their theme, and much of the décor in the café comes from her personal collection of music memorabilia. Some menu items are named after famous classic rock and soul songs. “My favorite would be the French dip, which would be my Pride & Joy, a roasted beef sandwich,” Steve said. “But the most popular is the Ruben sandwich called Juke Box Hero.” Customer Cathy White said it was nice to have a coffee shop down the street from her home that is not a chain, has good coffee and good music, which is a nice change from the hip-hop she hears almost everywhere she goes, including her gym. “We support local business and local artists,” Mickie said. “We have live music, song and story time for kids, and open mic night for people who just want to come by and just try things. We also have a song writer night where musicians come to brainstorm and bounce around ideas.”
