What we reported

The Texas Department of Transportation began a construction project in 2016 to widen the thoroughfare from FM 1791 to FM 1097, located north of Montgomery.

The agency is now preparing a similar project that affects the city of Montgomery, with the road between Hwy. 105 and FM 1097 set to see a $6.9 million widening. Construction includes adding a left-turn lane between FM 1097 and Hwy. 105, sidewalks, landscaping and drainage improvements.

The latest

The project treads directly through Montgomery’s Historic District, which has caused concerns from some business owners along Liberty Street over lost parking space. In response, TxDOT delayed construction and has been meeting with the city to discuss the project, TxDOT officials said.

What’s next

The agency plans to meet with the city of Montgomery again in February and business owners soon. Once construction on the project begins, it will take roughly 12 months to complete. The project will be done in two phases, allowing a cross street to have continual access.
