In July, San Antonio Spurs star Jonathon Simmons turned a $150 tryout fee into a three-year $18 million deal with the Orlando Magic, and now the Austin Spurs are offering you the same chance. The G League feeder team to the San Antonio basketball dynasty is holding open tryouts on Sept. 16 at the Round Rock Sports Center.
For the same $150 fee Simmons paid in 2013, you can show off your athletic prowess for the opportunity to attend Austin Spurs training camp in October. From there, you could follow the path of Jeff Ledbetter, an Austin Spurs player from the 2016-17 season, who competed on the 2017 Spurs Summer League team in Las Vegas, averaging 6.4 points and 1.6 assists a game.
Or you could tread the same trail as Eric Dawson, who played for the Austin Spurs, then Toros, in 2007 and went on to play basketball internationally, most recently in Puerto Rico.
If you are especially athletic, you might become the next Simmons, who helped take the place of NBA great Kawhi Leonard when he fell to an ankle injury in the 2017 NBA playoffs.
Tryout participants should submit registration and disclosure forms with a $150 tryout fee prior to Sept. 13. Walk-up fees increase to $175.
Only the first 150 registered players will be able to participate. Required forms are available
here.
