Austin City Hall was packed Friday as elected officials, community stakeholders, family and friends gathered to witness the inauguration of five Austin City Council members. In only the second inauguration ceremony for the council since establishing the new 10-1 council structure, Friday night’s swearing in included three incumbent council members back and introduced two new members. All five elected officials received four-year terms. After drawing the short straw and serving abbreviated two-year terms, council members Delia Garza, Greg Casar and Leslie Pool took their oaths to return to council, and District 6 representative Jimmy Flannigan and District 10 Council Member Alison Alter were sworn in for the first time. Mayor Steve Adler, who acknowledged the night’s significance as the first transition within the 10-1 council, welcomed back the trio of incumbents and pair of newcomers. He said he was proud on the city council’s accomplishments during the last two years, citing the elected body's focus on issues such as clean energy, public safety, affordable housing and institutional racism. “What we came here to accomplish will not get done accidentally. It is up to use to sue this time wisely, effectively, productively,” Adler said. “Because council members, mayors, come and go. In this brief time we have on this dais, we are the temporary trustees of the hopes and dreams of Austinites. We bear a great responsibility and a community trust.” The night’s meeting did have one official item of business on the agenda: electing a council member to serve as the new mayor pro temporal. The mayor and council unanimously approved District 9 Council Member Kathie Tovo. For Tovo, who is the only council member to have served on council prior to the 10-1 restructuring, this is her second-consecutive term as mayor pro tem.
