Construction on the concrete makeover of several Humble roads began Monday as part of the city’s 2016 Concrete Pavement Improvement Plan.
Asphalt-paved roads will be converted to 6 inches of concrete pavement. Curbs on Main and Davis streets as well as Avenues C, D, E, F and H and 2nd through 7th streets will also be converted.
The $6.1 million project includes new sewer lines and water lines in the Benders subdivision and on Main Street. Hirsch Street will receive a new water line while the existing sewer system on Davis Street will be upgraded, according to pavement plan.

Construction is expected to conclude in early 2018, and provide more long-term solutions for Humble infrastructure, said Public Works Director Barry Brock.
“[Asphalt] is good for 15-20 years and [concrete] is good for 40-50 years,” Brock said.
The project began in the Benders subdivision, where project workers are locating current sewer lines before beginning on the new gravity sewer line at Avenue D, Brock said. During pavement work, the streets will be reconstructed one lane at a time with one-way traffic maintained on the adjacent lane, according to the pavement plan.
Some homeowners will lose access to their driveways because of construction, he said.
“There’s going to be some minimum displacement to people who will have to park on the street,” Brock said. “That’s going to be one of the toughest things that people have to deal with.”
The 2016 Concrete Pavement Improvement Plan follows similar plans from 2015 and 2013. While the $5.4 million 2013 Concrete Pavement Improvement Plan targeted Wilson Road between Atascocita Road and Will Clayton Parkway, the $7.3 million 2015 plan added concrete to Main and Higgins streets.
Both also included sewer and water line projects.
