Editor's note: This story has been updated with comments from New Caney ISD Executive Director of Public Relations Scott Powers.
On Feb. 9, New Caney ISD’s board of trustees selected a construction company to build the district’s new $21.4 million operations and transportation facility after canceling a previous contract for the project in December.
What happened
NCISD trustees have selected Houston-based Gamma Construction Co. for the project again, after originally selecting them Oct. 20. The new contract is for $19.7 million, Scott Powers, executive director of public relations for NCISD, said in a Feb. 13 emailed statement.
On Dec. 15, the NCISD board of trustees voted to terminate Gamma Construction’s contract for the project after Spring-based ICI Construction Inc. filed a lawsuit in November, as previously reported by Community Impact. ICI Construction had submitted a bid during the district’s first round of bidding for the project.
In December, Powers said the board opted to terminate the contract "for convenience, not cause." District officials also said they didn't anticipate the December contract changes to largely impact the project's timeline.
"NCISD’s re-procurement of the operations center project was based on a decision to minimize the costs and further delays that would have resulted from continuing to defend the district’s original procurement process against ICI Construction’s challenge. ... NCISD does not foresee any issues with the re-procurement of the project or the award of the re-procured contract to Gamma Construction. NCISD is confident that all legal requirements have been met, and the District is ready to move forward with this project," Powers said Feb. 13.
The project
Construction on NCISD’s operation and transportation facility is slated to wrap up by February 2027, as previously reported. The facility will have offices, workshops, warehouse space and meeting rooms.
The new facility will be located at 21026 Loop 494, New Caney, which is the current site for NCISD’s Transportation Department.
The project is funded by the district’s $695 million bond, which voters approved in May 2023, as previously reported.
