The New Braunfels Economic Development Corp., or NBEDC, will be allocating $700,000 in funds for Phase 1 of the AAMPO Citywide Pedestrian Improvements Project after City Council approval July 14.

Project details
Phase 1 of the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization Citywide Pedestrian Improvements Project aims to increase pedestrian connectivity by filling sidewalk gaps and adding Americans with Disabilities Act concerns at Alves Lane and Brook Avenue, the Christus Santa Rosa area, Oak Run Parkway, County Line Road and FM 725, according to July 13 City Council agenda documents.
This final design for this project, which began in 2023, was funded by the NBEDC. It will provide construction match funding for the construction of all five segments in Phase 1 of the project, agenda documents state.
Project construction is expected to be $1,744,000. AAMPO has committed 80% of the construction funding for the project, leaving the city responsible for the remaining 20%. The approved $700,000 would include the city’s 20% match of any construction funding, construction contingency and construction administration services, agenda documents state.

City Council approved a $168,724.50 contract amendment with engineering firm Freese & Nichols for additional survey, construction administration and Texas Department of Transportation Local Government Construction Administration. The contract change brings the total design contract amount to $445,662, according to agenda documents.
In November 2024, City Council approved a final design contract with Freese & Nichols for $247,593. In May, the NBEDC approved $700,000 in additional funding for the city’s 20% match of construction contingency and construction administration services, according to agenda documents. During design, two amendments totaling $29,344.50 were made due to design changes and contract updates, according to agenda documents.
Next steps
City Council is expected to award a construction contract for Phase 1 of the AAMPO Citywide Pedestrian Improvements Project in August, according to agenda documents.
Mayor Pro Tem and District 2 council member Michael Capizzi said these transportation projects are going to “tremendously improve” the community.
“Kudos to staff for working on this,” Capizzi said.
Project construction is expected to begin in late 2026.
