The New Braunfels board of trustees met Sept. 12 to consider appointing a trustee to fill the vacancy left by former board President Wes Clark, who resigned from his position Aug. 6.
Former NBISD Trustee David Heefner was appointed to fulfill the open trustee position. Board President Eric Bergquist said the decision was made to appoint Heefner due to his previous experience on the board.
“We decided No. 1 that the candidate would not be running for school board in May of 2023, as we would like this decision to be made by the citizens of New Braunfels Independent School District by an election as opposed to an appointment,” Bergquist said. “And No. 2, knowing that this appointment was going to be short term, we felt it was necessary to appoint someone with prior board experience who can hit the ground running with all the big decisions in front of us that we'll be facing in the next nine months.”
Heefner was elected as trustee at large in 2016 and again in 2019 but did not to run for re-election in May 2022. The at-large trustee position will open to candidates in the May 2023 election.
