New Braunfels Utilities has completed two projects designed to strengthen electricity reliability and support the city's growing needs.
The two projects, named Hueco Springs Substation and Henne Substation, are funded through a combination of impact fees, utility rates and the Service Availability Charge, according to a news release.

The Hueco Springs Substation, located along River Road at Edwards Boulevard, will serve NBU customers in the Veramendi area and western portions of NBU’s service territory. The $13.13 million project provides additional electricity capacity and flexibility to help maintain service during equipment issues, maintenance work and unexpected outages, according to the release.
Construction on NBU’s portion of Hueco Springs Substation began in June 2025 and was completed in December of that year. The Lower Colorado River Authority began construction on its portion of the project in January, and it was completed in May. The Hueco Springs Substation was energized in June after both portions of the project were complete, according to an email from NBU Senior Communications Specialist Charlcee Cervantez.
NBU also completed upgrades to the Henne Substation located at 5207 Goodwin Lane. Construction on the $4.89 million project began in September 2025 and consisted of converting the substation to a breaker-and-a-half configuration. This is a more advanced design that meets LCRA standards and improves system reliability by giving operators more flexibility to conduct maintenance or isolate equipment issues while minimizing customer outages, according to the release.
The Henne Substation upgrades were completed in May, according to the email from Cervantez.
