McKinney completes over $3.17M in renovations at Cottonwood Park

The city of McKinney will hold a celebration commemorating the completed renovations to Cottonwood Park in McKinney.

A community party July 24 will highlight the more than $3.17 million invested in preserving and redeveloping the park at 212 McMakin St.

Cottonwood Park, the city said in a news release, now includes two pavilions, a shaded basketball court, play equipment, a splash feature, additional parking, food truck outlets, pedestrian walkways around the park, and additional landscaping and lighting.

The party will feature a DJ and food trucks from 6 p.m. to dusk. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets to the event. A screening of “Raya and the Last Dragon” will be held.

Cottonwood Park was one of 10 parks recommended in the 2017 Parks Master Plan for renovation, according to the release. Funding for the project came from parkland dedication fees and from the McKinney Community Development Corp.

“Cottonwood Park was close to vibrant neighborhoods and schools, but it was underutilized because of outdated equipment,” Parks and Recreation Director Michael Kowski said in the release. “We wanted to make this place special for the community and bring a wow factor to this park.”
