Number of new unemployment claims slows in McKinney ZIP codes

McKinney residents are still filing unemployment claims, but the rate at which the claims are being filed is declining from a month ago, according to Texas Workforce Commission data.

According to the data, 2,087 McKinney residents filed for unemployment between May 20-June 20. The number of McKinney residents who filed the month before that was higher, at 3,811 claims.

From April 22-May 23, 1,250 people from McKinney’s 75070 ZIP code filed for unemployment. This number decreased to 738 during the May 20-June 20 time frame, a decrease of about 41%.

During the same windows, the number of claimants from ZIP code 75069 decreased from 664 to 350, down by about 47%. In the 75071 ZIP code, that number dove from 1,102 to 605, or about 45%. Claimants from 75072 declined from 795 to 394, more than 50%.

Tarrant County’s top five industries for unemployment claims from May 20-June 20 were full-service restaurants, temporary help services, elementary and secondary schools, limited-service restaurants and general medical and surgical hospitals, according to the Texas Workforce Commission data.

The statewide unemployment claims now total more than 400,000.

The No. 1 industry for statewide unemployment claims is full-service restaurants, followed by temporary help services and then limited service restaurants at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
