McKinney introduces neighborhood street sign topper program

McKinney neighborhoods are now eligible to apply for street topper signs to distinguish the community from neighboring areas.

McKinney City Council approved a resolution at its Jan. 18 meeting to implement a street sign topper program. The program is meant to “promote neighborhood identity and pride” within the city, according to meeting documents.

In order to apply, areas must be recognized as a neighborhood or homeowners association within McKinney city limits for at least 10 years. The application must include a $150 fee and a sample of the proposed sign topper. Neighborhoods without established homeowners associations will not have to pay the fee.

City documents include guidelines for sign toppers, including colors, materials and graphics. Sign toppers may not be longer than 2 feet or higher than 10 inches.

A committee of the neighborhood services and engineering department and a designated neighborhood representative must approve the sign topper before it is installed. Installation costs $50 per sign topper. Neighborhoods in certain census tracts may be eligible for grant funding to offset the costs of manufacturing and installing the sign toppers, according to city documents.

Neighborhoods may submit applications online beginning Jan. 20 or in person at the neighborhood services department, located at 406 N. Tennessee St., McKinney.
