Lewisville ISD outlines solar eclipse plans

Lewisville ISD plans to experience the historic total solar eclipse with students April 8.

More than 300 North Texas cities will see the eclipse pass over Dallas-Fort Worth skies. In a total eclipse, the moon will completely cover the sun for up to 4.5 minutes, depending on the viewpoint. It’s a once-in-a lifetime experience for North Texans, Total Eclipse DFW founder Jo Trizila said. The Dallas-Fort Worth area won’t see another total eclipse for about 300 years.

District staff members are incorporating the event into lesson plans to enhance the educational experience for all students, according a district news release.

The youngest grade levels will not view the eclipse outside. Instead, kindergarten through second graders will have the opportunity to watch NASA's livestream of the eclipse. Teachers are encouraged to view NASA’s other online resources to explain the event to students.

Students in grades 3-12 will have the option to view the eclipse outside. The Perot Museum donated protective eyewear, which all students will be required to wear. Information for safely viewing the eclipse can be found on NASA’s website.
