With more than $120,000 in additional funding, Leander residents can expect an expanded Independence Day celebration honoring America’s 250th anniversary during the city’s annual free Liberty Fest on July 3.
As part of the expanded programming, the city will host a drone show at 9:30 p.m., followed by a fireworks display.
What to expect
Since parking is not allowed at Devine Lake Park, attendees can park at Danielson Middle School and Glenn High School for free beginning at 5 p.m. A free, wheel-chair accessible shuttle service at Glenn High School will begin loading passengers to Devine Lake Park at 5:30 p.m.
Those planning to be dropped off should use Bagdad Elementary School along Deercreek Lane.
Festival gates will open at 6 p.m., half an hour before Braedon Barnhill is scheduled to perform. The national anthem will be played at 8 p.m., followed by a performance by IMY2.
A Kids Zone, which is offering entry for a $10 wristband, will feature activities for children, including bounce houses, slides and basketball. The city of Leander’s information booth will be selling wristbands during the event.
During the festival, the Leander Public Art and Culture Commission will unveil the 250 Community Mosaic Mural, which features 256 tiles individually painted by attendees June 6 at Old Town Street Festival.
Road closures will affect sections of Waterfall Avenue and Maple Creek Drive between 5:30 and midnight.
Friday night is expected to be "mostly clear," according to forecasts from the National Weather Service.
While coolers and outside food are not permitted, food and alcoholic beverages can be purchased inside the event. Additionally, water stations will be available at the park and attendees can bring two sealed water bottles along with empty refillable bottles.
Leashed pets are allowed at the event, but are not permitted on the free shuttle buses.
Other projects
Leander’s Parks and Recreation Department will also host a bike and pedestrian parade that will loop from beginning to end at Camacho Elementary. The parade will begin at 9 a.m. July 3.
Street closures along sections of Municipal Drive, South West Drive and West South Street will be in effect from 8:30-11 a.m.
