Terms

The council consists of the mayor and six councilmembers elected from the city at-large. The term of office for all members is two years. The mayor and council members can serve no more than three successive terms.

Compensation

Council members are unpaid positions.However, members can get reimbursed for expenses they incur for council business.

Lakeway City Manager Steve Jones identified some key decisions made by the Lakeway City Council, with the help of staff, in 2011 and some issues the council would like to work on in 2012.

Big decisions made in 2011

• Issuing bonds on behalf of the Lake Travis Community Library District — Lakeway issued bonds for the library, which will make all bond payments, allowing the district to acquire funding at much better rates and terms, and facilitated beginning construction of the new library facility.
• Funding construction of the new walking trail on Lakeway Boulevard — Funding construction of the new walking trail on Lakeway Boulevard was a huge success, Jones said. The project greatly improved the appearance of the boulevard, and it is well-used by residents.
• Protecting residents — While they are not quite finished, the City Council has done a lot of work this year in protecting residents from nuisances such as noise, short-term home rentals and sexually oriented businesses.
• Lake Travis Economic Impact Study — By helping to fund the Lake Travis Economic Impact Study, the City Council provided leadership and funding that helped make the study a reality.

Top issues for 2012

• Quality of life — The council will continue to protect the quality of life that draws people to this area as more development occurs and more changes take place.
• Capital improvement — Lakeway will complete a capital improvement plan for future city facilities and infrastructure.
• Completion and opening of Lakeway Regional Medical Center
• Traffic — Staff and council hope to find ways to address traffic congestion on RR 620. The Lakeway Regional Medical Center is expected to increase traffic in an area that already has traffic congestion, especially during Lake Travis high school and middle school drop-off schedules.
