Concordia University Texas breaks ground on $4M athletic complex

The Concordia University Texas Board of Regents joined faculty members, students and the Four Points community at the university's future softball field's home plate to celebrate the start of construction on the school's new athletic facilities.

The $4 million project is slated to be completed by spring 2015, Athletic Director Stan Bonewitz said. The softball program is planning to start their 2106 season on the new field, he said.

The new complex marks the first time Concordia's 17-year-old softball program will have a home field, he said.

"None of those places [we previously played] were home," Concordia University Texas CEO Don Christian said. "Now we're bringing our softball team home."

In addition to the NCAA-regulation field, the project includes covered grandstands with capacity for 300 spectators, dugouts, lights and parking. A road behind the fields will also be extended on the west side of the new softball stadium and existing baseball stadium to allow for easier access to the fields.

"This [new athletic facility] will be the biggest project we've done since [moving from downtown Austin to the RR 620 site in 2008]," Director of Donor relations John B. Adams said.
