Humble ISD Portrait of a Graduate

After formulating a team of community stakeholders that included parents, teachers, students and administrators, the district is expected to pass its Portrait of a Graduate at its March 21 board of trustees meeting. The plan outlines the core competencies community stakeholders expect from students, such as communication, being a global citizen, critical thinking and leadership.

City of Houston pension hearing

State lawmakers will hold a hearing Monday to discuss the city of Houston’s pension reform plan. The city wass facing $8.1 billion in unfunded pension liabilities for city police officers, firefighters and municipal workers, Mayor Sylvester Turner said. In the pension reform deal, police officers, firefighters and municipal agreed to reduce benefits by 30 percent and the city agreed to take out pension obligation bonds to repay the $750 million it borrowed from the plans in the past, Turner said.

Top golfers commit to Shell Houston Open

The world’s No. 1 golfer Dustin Johnson has committed to compete in the Shell Houston, an annual PGA Tour event held in Fall Creek, according to the Houston Golf Association. Johnson and world No. 6 Jordan Spieth joined the field March 13, according to the HGA. Johnson and Spieth headline a field that includes major tournament winners Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Padraig Harrington and Angel Cabrera. Harris County proposes new solution to flooding

The Harris County commissioners voted to recommend a study of technology that could prevent future flooding by redirecting stormwater to underground aquifers. Commissioners recommended conducting a joint study that will be funded by the county and the Harris County Flood Control District to investigate the feasibility of using new technology to pump stormwater into underground aquifers in Precinct 4.

City of Houston to invest in Northpark Drive

The city of Houston has agreed to commit $18 million toward the expansion of Northpark Drive in Kingwood, Mayor Sylvester Turner and council member Dave Martin said. The $18 million was originally earmarked for the expansion of Kingwood Drive to six lanes between Hwy. 59 and Woodland Hills Drive on the city’s 2018 Capital Improvement Plan. The funds will now be used to expand Northpark Drive from four to six lanes between Hwy. 59 and Woodlands Hills Drive next year, said Jessica Beemer, North Sector Manager for the office of Houston City Council Member Dave Martin. Shifting city funding to Northpark Drive’s expansion could be approved by the city council before the end of the year.
