Humble city officials announced the appointment of longtime resident Margaret Jo Johnson Byron to serve as grand marshal for the city’s 35th annual Christmas Parade of Lights.
The details
Mayor Norman Funderburk announced the appointment at the city council’s Sept. 24 meeting.
“We wanted someone special, someone ‘old Humble’ that you all knew,” Funderburk said. “You’re part of an esteemed group now.”
Byron said it was an honor to lead the parade.
“I thank you all,” Byron said. “Humble is a special place for me. I grew up here. My mother was born here, and I can’t tell you how much I hold it in my heart.”
Some background
Earlier this year, Humble ISD officials named Byron a 2026 Distinguished Alumna, according to a May 30 news release from the Humble Museum.
Byron graduated from Humble High School in 1963 and has since participated in many town events and committees, per the release.
In addition to participating in the Salt Grass Trail Ride for 50 years, Byron was instrumental in the restoration of the city’s historic cemetery on South Houston Avenue, according to the release.
Byron also played a role in the establishment of the Humble Museum, where she served as a board member for 10 years. She has been an active member of the Humble Beautification Committee since 1993.
