Q&A: Get to know the Democratic candidates running for Congressional District 29 ahead of the March primaries

Why are you running for office?

I’m running to keep fighting for working families and ensure the government delivers real results. Too many families face rising costs of groceries, housing, and utilities. I’m running to lower costs, strengthen disaster resilience, and stand up to Donald Trump and Republicans’ efforts to undermine our democracy and strip away rights.

If elected, what will your priorities be regarding property taxes and housing affordability?

I serve on the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee, where we’re working to expand affordable housing, support first-time homebuyers, reduce the cost of homeowners and flood insurance, and strengthen the National Flood Insurance Program. These are key tools to lower housing costs and help families stay in the communities they call home.

How will you ensure your district is prepared for extreme weather and flooding?

I will continue securing federal funding for critical flood resiliency and drainage infrastructure, work I’m already delivering in Congress. I’ll also push for extreme heat and grid resilience investments and ensure FEMA has the resources and capacity to respond quickly and effectively when disasters hit our region.

How do you plan to involve residents in the decision-making process?

I regularly host town halls and roundtables with constituents and stakeholders to understand the needs of our district. When I’m home, I’m constantly meeting people where they are like the post office and the grocery store. Staying accessible and listening is how I deliver results that reflect real community priorities.

With district boundaries and representation changing, how will you ensure your constituents have the resources they need?

No matter how district lines change, I’ll keep fighting to bring resources home. I’ve secured funding for community projects, rail grade separations, energy transition work at the Port, and pollution control services. I know how to deliver federal dollars and will continue doing that for families across the new TX-29.

Why are you running for office?

I am running because working families deserve leadership that shows up and delivers. For too long, Republicans have protected power and ignored people. I have spent my career fighting for neighborhoods that are overlooked, and I am running to bring that same results-driven leadership to Congress.

If elected, what will your priorities be regarding property taxes and housing affordability?

Property taxes are pushing families out. I authored the legislation creating the Houston Land Bank, turning abandoned properties into affordable homes. In Congress, I will expand proven housing models, protect homeowners, and push back on Republican policies that favor corporations over community stability.

How will you ensure your district is prepared for extreme weather and flooding?

I have already brought millions in infrastructure dollars back for drainage, street repairs, and flood mitigation. Preparation requires real investment, not denial.
