Dallas homeowners can register to receive free tree from city

Throughout September, Dallas homeowners can register to receive a free 5-gallon tree from the city.

The setup

Registration for the city’s fifth annual Branch Out Dallas program, which is led by the Dallas Forestry team, opened Sept. 5. Homeowners have until Sept. 30 to register online for a free tree, which will be distributed on Dallas Arbor Day on Nov. 4.

This year, the forestry team expects to distribute 2,500 trees, according to a city news release. Registered residents can choose from six tree species: bur oak, ​sycamore, ​Mexican plum, ​American elm, ​shumard oak or ​lacebark elm.

“Trees reduce the amount of stormwater runoff to drainage systems, help cool temperatures, improve air quality and mitigate the heat island effect," said Sarah Standifer, interim director of Dallas Water Utilities, in a news release.

What to expect

To qualify for a free tree, homeowners must live in the city of Dallas. Only one tree will be gifted per household.

The trees will be distributed Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at six locations:

• ​Cristo Rey Dallas College Prep, 9701 San Leon Ave.
• St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic School, 4019 S. Hampton Road
• Tyler Street Church, 927 W. 10th St.
• Marsh Lane Baptist Church, 10716 Marsh Lane
• June Shelton School, 17301 Preston Road
