Keller officials warn of traffic delays due to George Floyd protest

City of Keller officials are cautioning residents of potential traffic delays due to a scheduled protest at Bear Creek Park on June 7.

Protesters are planning to gather in response to the death of George Floyd, a black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis on May 25. The protest is expected to begin at noon, and those in attendance will walk from Bear Creek Park to Keller Town Hall, according to a statement from the Keller Police Department.

“Protesters are expected to walk from the park eastbound along Bear Creek Parkway,” the statement said. “They will cross Rufe Snow Drive at the intersection adjacent to The Keller Pointe and continue north on Rufe Snow before turning right into Town Center near the Keller ISD Natatorium.”

According to Keller PD, drivers traveling in and around Keller Town Center around noon should “be prepared to stop” to allow protesters to cross the street safely. Officers with Keller PD will be in attendance to direct traffic and may make a decision to pause or redirect traffic away from the protest “to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Keller public safety officials are also requesting that those attending the protest continue to practice safety measures to prevent spread of the COVID-19 virus, including the use of face masks, gloves and hand sanitizer.

“As always, Keller first responders are prepared should anyone become violent or destructive,” the statement said. “Thank you all for the dialogue over the past week. North Texas suburbs have seen several peaceful protests in recent days, and we hope and expect to see a safe and successful event here in Keller.”
