Northwest ISD students walked through the doors of their respective schools for the first day of class Aug. 12.

Students, including kindergarteners heading to elementary school for the first time, at Romer Elementary School were welcomed by teachers and staff.
The start of the 2026-27 school year marked the opening of new schools and facilities in the district, including Romer Elementary, Barksdale Middle School and the Dr. Hicks Early Childhood Education Center, all of which were funded by the district's 2023 bond package, according to previous reporting.
NISD has 38 instructional campuses, including two centers, 24 elementary schools, eight middle schools and four high schools. The district serves more than 32,000 students across 234 square miles, according to its website.

The district board of trustees approved the 2025-26 instructional calendar in January. The calendar includes a list of professional development days for the district and details upcoming holidays. Highlights include:
- Sept. 7: Labor Day holiday
- Nov. 23-27: Thanksgiving break
- Dec. 21-Jan. 1: winter break
- Jan. 18: Martin Luther King Jr. holiday
- Feb. 15: district holiday
- Mar. 15-19: spring break
- May 21: end of spring semester
