The construction completion dates for Byron Nelson High School's and Eaton High School's new football stadiums were pushed out due to construction updates, Northwest ISD’s board of trustees heard during a facilities update at the Oct. 26 meeting.
Other capital projects discussed during the meeting include updates to Byron Nelson's and Eaton's arenas and the guaranteed maximum price for the first phase of the Northwest ISD Central Campus Master Plan and Texan Stadium Renovation.
The overview
Sarah Stewart, NISD’s chief of facilities, said that Byron Nelson High School’s football stadium will be finished in February 2027, about three months after its original target completion date of November.
Air conditioning will be added to the concession stands, pushing out the completion date to February. The project is 88% complete, according to a presentation from Stewart.
“In getting that designed and getting the air conditioning units ordered and installed, it’s going to take a few more months to finish that [project],” Stewart said.
Stewart also said there are some minor issues with finishing the final touches to the stadium, such as the elevating work platform being locked out, that have added to the delay. The contractor will have to use a different method to finish those final punch list items.
“That’s not our fault, but the contractor wanted to be transparent with us and let us know about those issues,” Stewart said.
Eaton High School’s stadium will be completed in May 2027 after an expected November completion. Stewart said there were some delays over the summer with utility work that prompted the project completion to be pushed out. That project is 62% complete, according to the presentation.
Construction completion for the arenas for both high schools, which hold the basketball courts and multi-use competition facilities, was also pushed out to May. The Eaton arena is 15% complete and Byron Nelson’s arena is 30% complete.
Funding for the projects comes from Proposition A of the nearly $2 billion voter-approved 2023 district bond, according to NISD’s website. Proposition A covers $1.67 billion of the bond and is dedicated to district capital improvement projects.
Zooming out
Other projects discussed at the meeting include the Central Transportation relocation, which is 75% complete and is expected to be finished in December. This project moves the existing central transportation facility and maintenance building away from its current setup to create a standalone hub, according to the district’s bond page.
Davis High School, the district’s fourth comprehensive high school, is on track to open in August 2027 and is 67% complete. Eaton High’s cafeteria is 90% complete and is scheduled to open in December.
What else?
Northwest ISD’s board of trustees unanimously approved the guaranteed max price for the first phase of the Northwest ISD Central Campus Master Plan and Texan Stadium Renovation.
The first phase of work can top out at nearly $3.58 million, and the scope of work includes site work, earthwork, paving, landscaping, drainage, electrical and utility improvements, according to district documents.
Funding for the updates to Texan Stadium comes from Proposition B of the 2023 bond. The specific portion of the bond dedicated to renovating Texan Stadium allots $7.66 million in updates.
Texan Stadium was constructed in 1950, and many facilities on-site have reached their lifespan, according to the district’s website.
