Roanoke Farmers Market set to open June 6 with special hours for seniors, at-risk residents

The city of Roanoke Farmers Market will officially return June 6 and will run every Saturday through the month of September.

City officials announced May 22 the farmers market will be moved to a new location within the Roanoke City Hall plaza. The market will operate under adjusted hours from 8-9 a.m. for senior citizens and residents with health complications and from 9 a.m.-noon for the general public, according to the announcement.

“For the health and safety of our community and farmers, we have new protocols in place for the 2020 farmers market,” officials said.

New guidelines for the farmers market include social distancing of 6 feet or more between vendors and shoppers; no customer handling of products; and no sampling, demonstrations or live music.

“Do not attend if you have any symptoms of illness,” city officials said. “Anyone who is at a higher risk, including individuals age 65 or older or [those] with underlying health conditions, should stay home.”

Additional precautions will be taken to combat the spread of the coronavirus, officials said.

Customers are being encouraged to use contactless payment or to utilize vendor options for online ordering and pick up to reduce the amount of time customers spend at each table.

“If cash will be used, we are requesting exact change as to minimize contact,” officials said. “No change [will be] provided back to customers.”
