Katy ISD’s newest junior high school will officially bear the name of two former district educators. The board of trustees named Junior High No. 17—located at 25737 Clay Road and set to open in fall 2021—as Bill and Cindy Haskett Junior High.
The Hasketts have more than eight combined decades of service in public education. Cindy Haskett taught at KISD from 1980 until she retired in 2005. Bill Haskett was first a student at Katy High School and returned as an assistant principal in 1978. He went on to serve as an assistant principal, a principal and a director of community education and special projects and contributed in other positions until his retirement in 2004, according to the district.
The KISD Naming Advisory Committee also recommended to the board that the former L.D. Robinson Pavilion be named “Martha Aki ECI Project TYKE” during the Oct. 26 meeting. Aki is set to retire in December and is the director of the KISD Early Childhood Intervention Project TYKE Program, where she has worked for 28 years. She has been an educator for 40 years, during which she has served as a specialist, teacher of students with auditory impairments, an early childhood special education teacher and a kindergarten teacher, according to KISD.
The former pavilion housed KISD’s rodeo arena and played host to FFA competitions before those activities were relocated to the new KISD Agricultural Sciences Center in 2019, according to a release from the district. The 25,000-square-foot facility will be repurposed to provide expanded space for the ECI Project TYKE program, which serves children from birth to 36 months with developmental delays or disabilities, according to the district.
