Here’s how work is progressing on the new FedEx Ground facility

Crews broke ground on the project in February 2016, and the facility will initially be home to 700 trailer parking spots and 144 docking stations for trucks on 229 acres. FedEx is in the process of filling 600 positions for the new facility, including package handlers and managerial roles.

During the next two years, the second phase of the project will expand the distribution center to more than 1.1 million square feet and employ 2,200 people while processing about 500,000 packages daily.

“Exact staffing needs have yet to be determined, but the facility will employ a mix of full- and part-time employees,” Addoms said. “We will add to the workforce as necessary to support increased demand for service in the area.”

FedEx has opened 15 new hubs since 2005 and expanded or relocated more than 500 centers in the same amount of time. Addoms said these network enhancements have led to faster delivery service in a majority of the U.S.

FedEx Ground worked with the KAEDC in partnership with Susan Dixon of Workforce Solutions on workforce recruitment. Meanwhile, Bates is also involved with the KAEDC Mobility and Public Infrastructure Committee as well as with the Greater Houston Partnership.

“This is an impressive facility being constructed by FedEx Ground,” KAEDC President Lance LaCour said in a statement. “Though just outside Katy ISD boundaries, the facility will have a major impact on our area and the entire west Houston region with its job creation.”
