Katy ISD’s board of trustees was presented the findings from surveys sent out over the summer on the elementary school 49 attendance boundary modifications at its Sept. 21 meeting.
The results come after Katy ISD moved forward with the construction of elementary school 49—located at 6435 Pitts Road in the district’s growing northwest quadrant—to help ease enrollment at Youngblood Elementary, Community Impact previously reported.
What we know
Chief Communications Officer Andrea Grooms said the first survey was sent out in June to 571 affected parents living in North Sunterra, Winward and Anniston—the three neighborhoods most impacted by the changes–with the district receiving 168 responses.
Due to the northwest quadrant being a “fast growth area,” most families living there tend to be new to the district, resulting in 54% of respondents reporting having lived in Katy ISD for only one to three years.
When asked their child’s primary method of commuting to school, 96% of respondents said being driven by a parent/guardian/friend or riding the bus.
Additionally, 28% said they have previously been impacted by attendance boundary modifications.
Sorting out the details
Survey results show more people support the proposed boundary modifications over not supporting them.
After hearing public feedback, the district presented survey in July with a second boundary option different from the first one from June to affected parents living in Anniston and Winward.
Options include:
Option 1 has Winward zoned to elementary school 49 and all of Anniston going to Youngblood Elementary.
Option 2 has Winward staying at Youngblood and those living in Anniston west of Anniston Lakes Drive going to elementary school 49 and those living in Anniston east of Anniston Lakes Drive going to Youngblood.
Results show more than half of the respondents prefer option 2.

No recommendations were given and no action was taken during the meeting. District officials said both surveys will remain active until Oct. 12.
