Katy ISD board of trustees approves district legislative priorities, prepares for 85th Legislature

Katy ISD will work closely with local legislators on key issues in anticipation of the upcoming legislative session in January.

KISD’s Legislative Priorities Advisory Committee presented its official recommendations to the district’s board of trustees at its Nov. 21 meeting.

LPAC’s four priorities include increased funding for state mandates, equitable accountability and transparency for all state-funded schools, streamlined Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills—also known as TEKS—and the removal of the state’s 8.5 percent cap for students receiving special education services.

The KISD board approved the district’s legislative priorities at its Dec. 5 workshop. LPAC officials started reaching out to local legislators in order to lay the groundwork for open discourse.

KISD Superintendent Lance Hindt said he is proud of the LPAC for coming up with a concise list of priorities that would benefit the district.

“Less is best where we can put our emphasis on those things that are truly important to this community,” Hindt said. “This will resonate in the minds of our representatives and senators, and I think they truly are items that we need to actively pursue at the next legislative session.”
