The gist
The Texas Department of Transportation conducted a speed zone study and the results from the study proposed speed limit changes, according to a TxDOT presentation.
The change would affect FM 2920 from the eastern city limit to Chestnut Road—about .957 miles of road—by increasing the speed limit from 30mph to 35mph. Additionally, along FM 2920, in a school zone from Howard Road to 390 feet west of the city’s east limit—about .800 miles of road—the speed limit would decrease from 35mph to 20mph when school zone lights are flashing, according to the presentation.
How we got here
A Jan. 28 Texas Department of Transportation proposal to change the speed limits along FM 2920 had left concerns among council members and community leaders like Julie Kangas, the principal of Concordia Lutheran High School, who spoke during public comment at the Feb. 17 workshop meeting. The original proposal included increasing speed limits rather than decreasing them.
The council then directed staff to reach out to TxDOT to conduct studies of the area after community response and concern.
"People already speed through downtown Tomball, and if the limit is raised to 40 or 45 mph, they will likely drive even faster," Kangas said in the Feb. 17 meeting.

Tomball City Council will bring this item to a future meeting to approve, then new speed limit signs would be installed and enacted, a TxDOT representative said during the workshop meeting.
