Community members and city officials celebrated the reopening of Jerry Matheson Park on May 16. The park now holds a playground, splash pad, walking trails, pickleball courts, shade structures and expanded parking.

The details

The park renovations are part of a multiphase renovation plan by the city of Tomball, partly funded through American Rescue Plan Act funds, according to prior reporting. Other funding sources included community entities such as Tomball Economic Development Corp. and a $750,000 grant from Texas Parks & Wildlife that was awarded in May 2021, as previously reported.

Mayor Lori Quinn said Jerry Matheson Park is a place to bring your family and hang out.

“Having a walking path of a mile, having more pickleball courts, having cover for the pool and the splash pads, having cover for people to come out and just sit and play, it lends to the quality of life that is so important in Tomball,” Quinn said. “That is what our citizens want.”

How we got here

The city of Tomball received $2.92 million from the March 2021 American Rescue Plan Act, as previously reported.

Tomball City Council authorized Phase 2 of park improvements during an October meeting and additional seating at Jerry Matheson Park during a November meeting.
Looking ahead

The next phase, Phase 3 of the park renovations, will include renovations to existing restrooms and upgrades to the utilities to include the lift station that services the park restroom and pool, Director of Public Works Drew Huffman said. Phase 3 is not funded or programmed at this time.
