The backstory
The annex was opened in 2022 at 19038 Unity Park Drive in Magnolia as a new substation for the sheriff's office, and includes a 13-person capacity holding facility onsite. Previously known simply as the Magnolia Annex, the station was renamed as the Sheriff Tommy Gage Magnolia Annex during a ceremony with county officials and officers.
Gage served as Montgomery County Sheriff from 2005-2017, announcing his retirement in 2016 after 35 years with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office in various positions. Prior to his time in Montgomery County, Gage spent 12 years with the Houston Police Department.
"I see so many people that I worked with that have been friends for years and will continue to be my friend until I take my last breath," Gage said during the ceremony. "I see the people that I've worked with, and the new ones that have come in. I hope that I'll have the opportunity, if I missed you, that I can shake your hand."
In their words
- "If you think about [former Montgomery County Sheriffs] Gene Reeves, Joe Corley and then you have Tommy Gage ... they started the culture of deterrence that you all are carrying on today, which makes Montgomery County a safer place," Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough said.
- "It's a true honor to stand with you today as we dedicate the Tommy Gage Annex here at Magnolia. This facility will serve the people of this community for many years to come, just as Sheriff Tommy Gage did throughout his distinguished career," Doolittle said. "Every time someone walks through these doors, they will be entering a space built on the legacy of a man who believed in serving others and giving back more than he took."
- "What you see here today is what you've seen here the last 45 years, what I've seen ever since I've been around Tommy Gage. He's as genuine today as he was back then," Riley said. "So it is an honor for me to be a small part of this. It's an honor for me to have two dear friends, one a retired sheriff, and one the current sheriff."
