Yokohamaya co-owner Jeff Fang said he is grateful to have a Japanese restaurant in Tomball because he loves the community and how friendly it is. The restaurant celebrated its first anniversary April 18.

A sushi chef for 20 years, Fang got his start in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, before moving to Texas. The Tomball restaurant is the second Yokohamaya location as Fang and his wife, Bing Wang, opened the first one in Cypress in 2017. The Cypress location was so successful that when a space opened up in Tomball, the landlord called Fang and asked if he wanted to open a restaurant there, Fang said.

“Customers make us who we are. If customers like my food, I’m so proud of that,” Fang said.

Fang and manager My Olivera said they allow customers to customize their own sushi rolls, some of which are added as a special.

The Tomball location has four sushi roll specials—Lucky 7, Kelli, Double Trouble and McKenna—with ingredients such as cream cheese, spicy tuna, crunch, avocado, honey wasabi and yellowtail.

Olivera said everything the restaurant makes is fresh and made to order.

Yokohamaya serves sushi, hibachi, ramen and noodle dishes, among other items, to offer something for everyone. However, the restaurant’s focus is on offering Japanese sushi, Olivera said.

She said Fang trains the other chefs so they can maintain the fresh food quality, but he continues to work alongside them, preparing sushi dishes. Fang said working hard for his business and customers is what keeps him going, even when he faces challenges like staffing shortages.

“Getting workers has been hard. We need more help because of the expansion and growth,” Olivera said.
